Metaforic Introduces Anti-Tamper Solution
MetaFortress Radically Increases Software Protection Time From a Matter of Minutes to Months or Even Years
SAN JOSE, Calif. — October 28, 2008 —
Software anti-tamper start-up, Metaforic today announced the immediate availability of MetaFortress, a software security solution that protects against all forms of hacking and software piracy. MetaFortress uses a network of thousands of cross-referenced checks, which could require years of painstaking work to overcome, therefore greatly increasing software protection time from minutes to several months or even years.
Software piracy contributes to an estimated $40 billion in lost software revenue worldwide and some industry estimates conclude that illegal copies of applications account for between 40 and 90 percent of all copies in use. Black market versions of popular commercial software applications from video games to computer operating systems are lucrative targets, in part because most software can be cracked and pirated within minutes.
“We are seeing growing demand for technologies aimed at protecting digital IP and safeguarding against application piracy and theft,” said Diana Kelley, partner at SecurityCurve. “Technologies such as encryption, obfuscation, and anti-tamper solutions, protect applications from unauthorized use, enforce the licensing model, and protect the underlying code from unapproved disclosure. Companies that care about these issues are looking for effective solutions that prevent misuse without negatively impacting customer experience or application performance.”
MetaFortress, which protects against hacking, reverse engineering, piracy and theft, was developed not only to provide superior software protection but also to address the weaknesses of other anti-tamper solutions on the market – namely the ease and speed of deployment, network performance, and the ability to debug code after initial protection has been applied.
“The software industry is under attack,” said Andrew McLennan, CEO of Metaforic. “Piracy and illegal usage is costing the software industry billions of dollars a year. Our aim is to protect and extend the profitable lifecycle of software by making a hacker''''''''s work as difficult and tedious as possible, so that the only way for users to reliably obtain a copy is through legitimate channels.”
MetaFortress, which can be incorporated into popular integrated development environments (IDEs) such as Visual Studio, can be used at any point during the development process, and takes less than an hour to go from installation to protection. Whereas other solutions can negatively impact application performance, MetaFortress has virtually no such impact. And, it is the only anti-tamper solution on the market that allows developers to debug code after the protection has been applied.
“It is not unusual to see pirated versions of software available even before the release of the commercial version. In some industries, the first few weeks of a product’s availability account for the majority of sales, so if you could prevent piracy in just the first two to four weeks from the launch of a product, overall sales could be doubled,” added McLennan.
